Nutrition Information Disclaimer

Nutrition figures shown on Every Feast recipes are estimates. Please read this before relying on them.

How the figures are calculated

Where a recipe shows nutrition information, it is calculated from the USDA FoodData Central database, maintained by the United States Department of Agriculture.

The method is:

  1. Each ingredient in the recipe is matched to an entry in the database
  2. The listed quantity is converted to grams
  3. Values are summed across the recipe and divided by the number of servings stated

No laboratory analysis of a cooked dish is involved.

What the figures do not account for

Ingredient variation. Cuts of meat, brands of sauce and sizes of vegetable differ. A database entry is an average, not your ingredient.

Cooking losses and gains. Frying adds oil that the ingredient list does not capture. Draining, skimming, reducing and discarding marinade all remove things it does. Neither is reflected.

Partial consumption. Marinades, frying oil, brines and simmering liquid are usually listed in full but only partly eaten. This is the largest single source of error, and it generally means our figures are higher than what you actually consume.

Serving size. “Serves 4” is our judgement about a reasonable portion. Your portion may differ substantially.

Unmatched ingredients. Some ingredients — regional seasonings in particular — have no reliable entry in the database. Where we cannot match one, we exclude it from the calculation rather than substitute a guess. A recipe carrying such an ingredient will state that its figures are incomplete.

This is not medical or dietary advice

Do not use our figures as the basis for decisions about a health condition. In particular, if you are:

  • managing diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, hypertension or any condition requiring dietary control
  • pregnant or breastfeeding
  • feeding an infant or young child
  • following a diet prescribed by a healthcare provider
  • managing a serious food allergy or intolerance

then please rely on your healthcare provider and on the nutrition labels of the ingredients you actually buy. Those labels describe the product in your hand. Our estimate does not.

Allergens

Allergen information on our recipes is based on the ingredients as listed. It cannot account for the specific products you buy, for manufacturing changes, or for cross-contamination in a factory or in your kitchen.

If you have a serious allergy, always read the label on every product you use. Recipes and their allergen notes are a starting point, not a substitute for checking.

Corrections

If a figure looks wrong, please tell us — we would rather fix it than leave it.
